McClintock’s eye for detail certainly helped narrow the whereabouts of lorem ipsum’s<\/em> origin, however, the \u201chow and when\u201d still remain something of a mystery, with competing theories and timelines. So how did the classical Latin become so incoherent? According to McClintock, a 15th century typesetter likely scrambled part of Cicero’s De Finibus<\/em> in order to provide placeholder text to mockup various fonts for a type specimen book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s difficult to find examples of lorem ipsum<\/em> in use before Letraset made it popular as a dummy text in the 1960s, although McClintock says he remembers coming across the lorem ipsum<\/em> passage in a book of old metal type samples. So far he hasn’t relocated where he once saw the passage, but the popularity of Cicero in the 15th century supports <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat I find remarkable is that this text has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Whether a medieval typesetter chose to garble a well-known (but non-Biblical\u2014that would have been sacrilegious) text, or whether a quirk in the 1914 Loeb Edition inspired a graphic designer, it’s admittedly an odd way for Cicero to sail into the 21st century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decade that brought us Star Trek<\/em> and Doctor Who<\/em> also resurrected Cicero\u2014or at least what used to be Cicero\u2014in an attempt to make the days before computerized design a little less painstaking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lorem ipsum<\/em> is so ubiquitous because it is so versatile. Select how many paragraphs you want, copy, paste, and break the lines wherever it is convenient. Real copy doesn’t work that way. And that\u2019s why a 15th century typesetter might have scrambled a passage of Cicero; he wanted people to focus on his fonts, to imagine <\/p>\n\n\n\n

their own content on the pages. He wanted people to see, and to get them to see he had to keep them from reading So when is it okay to use lorem ipsum<\/em>? First, lorem ipsum<\/em> works well for staging. It’s like the props in a furniture store\u2014filler text makes it look like someone is home.
